about

"Morton Feldman is quoted as saying “My primary concern (as in all my music) is to sustain a ‘flat surface’ with a minimum of contrast.” Listening to Strung Out I think that it may have and play similar concerns -- played with quite differently. The ‘flat surface’ or the ‘string-out on a line’ of a forest of noises, textures and bent rubber bounces co-exist with worlds of melody lines without consideration for the consequences, which seems to be one of the definitions of ‘merrily’. "De camper van Dikeman’s" joyous swing of short and long-term memory-loss comes out of and to nowhere. Strung Out finds the time to lope and smear even when it is falling with Keaton quickenesses of grace and gravity. There is a beautiful moment in “Geuzenveld Wildlife” when out of the slack and taught clacking moss clothesline of attacks comes an out of sorts Mediterranean jazz line and passes by as if briefly (but not gesturally) dialed through on a short wave radio. This is an incredible string band."
